Ketchikan girls, boys sweep Homer

The Ketchikan girls and boys basketball teams swept nonconference games at Homer on Thursday night. The girls notched a 58-43 victory over the Mariners, while the boys completed the sweep with a 72-65 victory.

The girls game was close through three quarters. The Mariners entered the final eight minutes trailing 43-39 but were outscored 15-4 in the final frame. Homer left a lot of points as the foul line, as they finished 17-of-33 from the charity stripe, while the Kings were 10-of-16.

Alexis Edwardson had a game-high 20 points for Ketchikan, while Laci Effenberger had 12 and Kristen Peterson added 10. For Homer, Reba Temple and Deanna Weaver had 12 points apiece.

In the boys game, the Kings jumped out to a 42-27 lead at the half, and Homer gradually chipped away at the lead in the second half. Simeon Schum and Jase Scudero each had 19 points for the Kings, while Gunnar Farstad added 13.

For Homer's well-balanced attack, Michael Pate had 14 points, Vance Wolford had 13 points, Dean DeVaney had 12 points and Colten Tutt had 10 points.

Warrior Rumble

The Nikolaevsk boys basketball team opened up the ConocoPhillips Warrior Rumble on Thursday with a 52-5 victory over Cantwell.

Christopher Kalugin and Jonah Yakunin had 16 points to lead the Warriors, while Josh Tyrrell scored all five of the points for Cantwell.

In other boys action, Port Lions defeated Valley Christian 71-53 and Valley Christian defeated Wasilla Lake 53-48. DJ Kewan and Greg Lukin had 15 points apiece to lead Port Lyons, while Alan Turner had 26 and Travis Bunker added 20 in a losing cause. In the Valley Christian victory, Bunker had 24 and Turner had 20. Adam Palmer paced Wasilla Lake with 18 points.

On the girls side of the tournament, Nikolaevsk lost 36-31 to the junior varsity of Cook Inlet Academy. The game was close throughout. CIA entered the final frame with a 25-24 advantage and pulled away for the victory.

Holly Kopp paced the Eagles with 17 points, while Tiffany Smith added 11. For the Warriors, Efrosia Yakunin had 15 points while Cassie Fefelov pitched in 10.

In the other girls game, Port Lions topped Wasilla Lake 46-34. Cierra Rosbustellini had 20 points for Port Lyons, while Chalsea Rosbustellini added 12. For Wasilla Lake, Ashley Stringer had 15 points and Nikki Hall added 10 points.

Eielson boys 67, Seward 55

The host Ravens put four players in double figures to pick up a nonconference victory over the Seahawks on Thursday.

Jarrett Miller paced Eielson with 17 points, while Kyle McConnell had 15 points and Charles King and Dwanye Fearon had 12 points apiece. Robert Perea paced Seward with 17 points, while Trevor Olsen added 14 points.

The host Ravens received 16 points from Alex Wood, 12 points from Sharee Miller and 10 points from Britney Anderson in picking up the nonconference victory on Thursday. Aubrey Stone paced Seward with 15 points.
