Kenai, SoHi hockey get sweep in valley

The Kenai Central High School hockey team completed its trip to the Valley with a win, defeating the Colony Knights 7-5 in a North Star Conference game at Brett Memorial Ice Arena in Wasilla.

In Saturday's late game at Brett Memorial, the Soldotna Stars skated to a 6-1win over Palmer in NSC play, breaking open a tight game with four goals in the third period.

The Kardinals led 3-0 after the first period and were up 5-2 entering the third period.

Colony pulled to within a goal, 6-5, with just under three minutes to play, but the Kardinals iced the win with a goal with the final goal of the game with one second left on the clock.

Owen Brewer led the Kardinals with four goals and an assist. Garrett Myers made 26 saves for Kenai.

The Stars thumped Colony in a North Star Conference game at Brett Memorial Ice Arena in Wasilla Friday.

Johnny Smith scored three goals and notched one assist, Andy Silver scored twice and Derek Martin picked up two goals and an assist for the Stars.

Egan Gleason made 23 saves for the shutout.

The Kardinals withstood an outstanding performance from Wasilla goaltender Nathan Banbury with an even better performance from Adrian Borchgrevink.

Borchgrevink scored four goals, including the game winner with 4:52 left in overtime, to propel Kenai to the victory Friday in North Star Conference play at Brett Memorial Ice Arena in Wasilla.

Kenai outshot Wasilla 38-15 for the game, but thanks to the heroics from Banbury, the Kardinals were actually trailing 3-2 heading into the final period.

But Borchgrevink scored the equalizer with 5:08 left in the third to set up his game winner.
