Peninsula high school skiers compete in freestyle Besh Cup races Sunday in Homer

Soldotna High School's Ryan Walton skied to a 27th place finish Sunday in the 5-kilometer J-1/OJ freestyle Besh Cup race in Homer, finishing in a time of 16 minutes, 45 seconds. Walton was the top peninsula high school finisher in the J-1/OJ race, finishing ahead of SoHi teammate Matthew Habermann, who came in 35th with a time of 17:13, and Skyview's Noah King, who was seven seconds behind Habermann in 36th.

Kenai's Christopher Hall capped a solid weekend in Homer by finishing 11th in the J2 division with a time of 17:45 over the 5-k course. Other peninsula racers in the boys J2 event included SoHi's Max Milliron in 14th with a time of 18:10, Skyview's Taylor Karnikis in 16th at 18:42 and Kenai's Dustin Reed, who finished with a time of 19:37 to claim 21st.

On the girls side of things, Homer's Aleta Phelps earned a third place finish in the J-1/OJ 5-kilometer freestyle event in a time of 17 minutes, 6 seconds, just four seconds off the pace set by winner Tazlina Mannix of Susistna Valley. Mannix also won Saturday's classical race.

Skyview's Elisabeth Habermann placed ninth in the J-1/OJ division in a time of 18:03. Habermann's Skyview teammate Elisha Tarries finished the course in 19:55 to claim 23rd place, while Skyview's Kendra Merkes finished with a time of 20:39 to claim 16th in the girls J2 division. Homer's Samantha Halpin rounded out peninsula high school finishers, coming in with a time of 22:20 to take 34th in the girls J-1/OJ division.
