Kaleidoscope

"Initiative" is the life skill this week: to do something, of one's own free will, because it needs to be done. The submission deadline is March 15. A lottery will be held April 12.

Coins for Caring has been extended for a week. Friday is the final day to donate. All proceeds will go to the Alaskan Red Cross for the tsunami victims.

The Reading Carnival is Saturday from 12 to 4 p.m. at Soldotna Middle School. Admission is free to performances by local students and booths with games and snacks.

Students will attend the Alaska Junior Theater's production of "Sharon Katz and the Peace Train," at Kenai Central High School Feb. 3. Permission slips are due Monday.

Second- and third-graders wrote a poem about snow after spending time outside experiencing cold, snow and frost. In math they are working in geometry discussing line segments, 3-D shapes and polygons. The art and science labs are busy adding pages to the "Gifts I Have" books, and experimenting with inertia and friction.

Field trips: Tuesday, first-graders go to the Forget-Me-Not Center and Wednesday, second- and third-graders perform at the Kenai Senior Citizens Center.
