Despite a hat trick from Paul Delago, Nikiski fell to visiting Houston, 11-3, on Thursday night at Jason Peterson Memorial Ice Rink.
Taking on one of the top teams in the Greatland Hockey Conference, the Bulldogs held their own in the opening period, trailing only 2-1 after 15 minutes.
“It was the best period they’ve played all season,” said Nikiski coach Irv Smith. “They played hard and attacked the net.”
Beau Calderwood and Jennifer Nickel recorded assists. It was Nickel’s first point of the season.
“It’s the first time anyone has scored a hat trick against them (this year),” Smith said.
The Hawks unleashed 35 shots to the Bulldogs’ 18, but Smith was not disappointed.
“We had 18 shots on goal which is probably the best total for us this year,” he said.
Both Sam Zulkanycz and Tyler Bethune played goal for Nikiski, which hosts Monroe today and Saturday.
