Pizza Man wins Seward hoops tourney

Pizza Man, from Eagle River, won the annual Wells Fargo Polar Bear Jumpoff Basketball Tournament on Jan. 7. The tournament was hosted by Seward Parks and Recreation. The tournament involved 10 teams from Seward, Homer, Anchorage and the Matanuska-Sustina valleys.

In the championship game, Pizza Man defeated Family West of Anchorage 77-75. West tied the game at 75 with 47 seconds left, but with less than five seconds left Brett Fortuney, the tournament’s most valuable player, nailed the winning shot for Pizza Man. Family West has played at the tournament for three years in a row and had a roaring crowd at that championship.

Members of the all-tournament team were Eric Rozeboom of the Marunners from Homer, Dave Washington and Aaron Alexander of Play D out of Anchorage, Jason, BJ and Robbie West of Family West, and K.C. Reid and Antonio Wyche of Pizza Man.

John Vereide won the 3-point contest and $30, while Link Fannon won the free-throw contest and $15.

The Breeze Inn Classic Tournament will be held in Seward on March 2, 3 and 4.
