Nikiski, CIA cagers score sweeps

Posted: Tuesday, January 26, 2010

The Nikiski girls basketball team improved to 6-6 overall this season by defeating visiting Ninilchik 43-40 on Monday in nonconference action.

The Bulldogs grabbed a 10-4 lead after the first quarter. Nikiski coach Lee Moore said the Wolverines came back and grabbed the lead in the third quarter, but that Nikiski did a good job sticking together as a team and came back for the win.

On Friday, Nikiski had lost to Class 2A school Seldovia. Seldovia then traveled to Ninilchik and lost in overtime to the Wolverines on Saturday. On Monday, Moore said the Bulldogs were able to beat the Wolverines by limiting silly fouls on defense and taking care of the ball.

"A big key was our passing," Moore said. "That was definitely improved. We had our lowest turnover total of the year."

Moore said Savannah Griffel did a good job of controlling the game from the point. Griffel had 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting from the floor. She also made 3-of-8 3-pointers and made some key passes down the stretch.

Makenzie Moore had 13 points for the Bulldogs and made several big jumpers in the fourth quarter. Moore was 5-of-11 from the floor. Kinsey Martin had 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Moore had nine rebounds while Kassi Johnson and Martin each had seven rebounds.

Lindsey Rohr paced the Wolverines with 15 points.
