Kenai resident Erica L. Summers lost her courageous fight against breast cancer and passed away Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011, at Alexander Cohen Hospice House Hughson, Calif. with her family by her side. She was 35.
A celebration of her life will be held at College Heights Baptist Church, 44440 Kalifornsky Beach Road, Soldotna, on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011, at 1 p.m.
Mrs. Summers was born in San Diego June 27, 1975. to Michael and Terri Fultz. The family moved to Hilmar, Calif., where she grew up, graduating from Hilmar High in 1993. She continued her education at Modesto Junior College.
In 1994 Erica met Scott Summers,. They married on May 17, 1997. After a few weeks of marriage they settled into their home in Alaska. Son Tristan was born in 2002, followed by daughter Brooke in 2005.
Though she worked at Wells Fargo Bank in Soldotna for 10 years, her priority in life was her family and her children. She was an incredible mother and a proud Hockey Mom who sincerely loved to volunteer her time in her kid's classrooms, the local hockey association or wherever else she was needed.
Facing her own diagnosis in 2006, she became active in raising funds for breast cancer awareness and even walked in the Susan G. Komen for the Cure 3-Day walk for the Cure in San Francisco twice. She was joined by her mother and her sister, as well as a few Kenai Peninsula residents.
Above all, Erica will be remembered as a loving and nurturing person who cared deeply for people.
Erica is survived by her husband of 13 years, Scott Summers, and her children Tristan and Brooke, all of Kenai; her sister Kelly Von Aspern, of Hilmar; brothers Russell Dunn, of Omaha, Neb., and Stephen Dunn, of Lawton, Okla.; and her parents, Michael and Terri Fultz, of Hilmar.
Breast cancer awareness was important to Erica and in her honor the family asks that in lieu of flowers please make memorial donations to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure at www.komen.org.
