German company tapped to promote Fairbanks

FAIRBANKS (AP) -- More tourists from Germany, Austria and Switzerland could be headed to Fairbanks in the near future.

The Fairbanks Convention and Visitors Bureau has hired a German company to promote the city in those countries.

Florian Schoenwetter, general manager for the Munich-based Best Choice, said he plans to push winter travel to Fairbanks as a vacation option. The company is earning about $40,000 for the job.

Schoenwetter said the best travel scenario would be to enlist Condor, a German airline, to fly in year-round. Last summer Condor flew round-trip once a week between Fairbanks and Frankfurt. It is unknown, however, whether the airline will return next summer.

Andrea Burucker, a spokeswoman for Best Choice, said it shouldn't be difficult to entice more German-speaking visitors to Fairbanks. She said many Europeans are already intrigued by Alaska, sled dog races and other winter activities.
