Nikiski girls pick up pair of district victories

The Nikiski girls shut out Susitna Valley in the first quarter Saturday en route to a 57-20 victory over the Rams.

The Bulldogs improved to 5-0 in District 3/3A and 6-3 overall with the victory, while Su Valley dropped to 0-6 in the district and 2-6 overall.

Karen Rabung and Amanda Weaver had 10 points apiece for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs remained undefeated in District 3/3A with a home victory over the Hawks Friday.

Karen Rabung and Sally Glaze both had huge game for Nikiski, with Rabung hitting for 29 and Glaze stepping up for 25. Nikiski had an 18-6 lead after the first quarter.

The Stars inside duo of Rachel Besse and Hillary Zobeck combined for 40 points in the home nonconference victory over the Lynx.

Besse had 23 points for Soldotna, while Zobeck added 17. The Stars took a 38-16 lead after the first half of the game.

The Kardinals matched baskets with the Cougars through the first quarter, but Kenai couldn't recover from a big second quarter by Service in a nonregion game at Kenai.

The Cougars went on an 18-9 run in the second quarter, taking a 28-18 lead into the locker room at the half.

Kenai narrowed the gap to seven (34-27) in the third quarter and pulled to witnin five points in the fourth quarter, but couldn't make up the rest of the difference.

Erin Smith paced the Kardinals with 14 points while Karli Knudsen finished with 10 points, including a pair of treys.
