Snow berm blocks police chief's view, collision follows

The Soldotna police chief was involved in a two-vehicle accident on the Kenai Spur Highway near Knight Drive on Monday morning, according to Alaska State Troopers.

No injuries were reported.

Chief John Lucking, 41, of Soldotna, said he was pulling out onto the highway in his 1993 Toyota pickup truck, but he had difficulty seeing around a snow berm and pulled out too far.

His pickup was struck by a 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier, driven by Alice Lee, 22, of Nikiski, which was southbound on the highway.

Lee told troopers she saw Lucking's vehicle pull out but could not avoid hitting it because of traffic in the left-hand lane.

The Chevrolet sustained significant damage and was towed from the scene. Damage to the chief's vehicle was minor, and he was able to drive it from the scene.

No citations were issued, and an investigation is continuing, according to a trooper report.
