Nikiski boys cagers get revenge on Skyview

Posted: Wednesday, January 28, 2004

Jeremiah Taylor poured in 34 points as the Nikiski boys basketball team avenged an earlier season loss to Skyview Tuesday in nonconference action at Skyview.

The Bulldogs and Panthers opened up the season playing each other in mid-December, with Skyview notching a 64-62 victory.

Taylor, who had his previous season high of 31 points in that contest, said extracting revenge was on the Bulldogs' minds Tuesday.

"They beat us by two points on our floor, so the revenge factor was there," Taylor said. "We needed this win."

From the outset, the Bulldogs played like they needed the win. Nikiski jumped out to a 6-0 lead before Skyview even attempted a shot.

While the Panthers were turning the ball over five times in the first two minutes of play, the Bulldogs were converting layups on three offensive rebounds.

Nikiski had a 33-25 lead at the half thanks to transition basketball resulting in good shots. The Bulldogs were 15 of 30 from the floor in the first half, while Skyview was 11 of 26.

In the third quarter, however, Skyview took advantage of some strong inside play to come back and take the lead at 44-43 on a layup by Nathan Schmidt with 50 seconds left in the quarter. Skyview was 9 of 16 from the field in the third, while the Bulldogs were a woeful 3 of 22.

"We came out at the half with the lead and we were playing too cocky," Taylor said. "They were coming back, but it really didn't register on us until they got the lead back.

"That woke us up for the fourth quarter."

In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs outscored the Panthers by a 27-11 margin to run away with the game. Nikiski improved its shooting to 7 of 9 in the final period, while Skyview cooled off to 5 of 12.

Miles Jorgensen pitched in 18 points for Nikiski, while Kevin Epperheimer added 15.

Schmidt paced Skyview with 14 points.
