Longtime Sterling resident Mary Alice Backstrom, 59, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2011, at her home in Sterling.
Memorial services will be held 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31, 2011, at Heritage Place, 232 W. Rockwell Ave. in Soldotna.
Mrs. Backstrom was born March 15, 1951, to Paul and Irene Modeen, in Duluth, Minn. She moved to Alaska on April 18, 1985, where her and her husband resided in Sterling. Mary worked for Heritage Place for a number of years as a housekeeper.
The family wrote, "She was loving, compassionate, and brutally honest. She was the rock that kept our family strong. She was a loving mother and wife of 40 years. She will be greatly missed."
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Darlene "Dolly."
She is survived by her husband, Dennis Backstrom; sons, Dennis Backstrom and Robert Backstrom; granddaughter, Alycia Backstrom; brothers, Daniel, Jerry, Paul, Bob, John and David; sisters, Marcie, Barbara, Connie, Trisha, Nancy, Shirley, Kathy, and Jackie; sister in-law, Sharon and many nieces and nephews.
