Kenai sweeps Seward

Posted: Friday, January 28, 2011

Kai Risung hit a go-ahead shot from the baseline with four seconds remaining and the Kenai Central boys basketball team earned a 51-50 win over Seward in an endowment game Thursday night at Kenai Middle School.

Kenai Central coach Ken Felchle said Risung picked up a loose ball after it was tipped from the hands of point guard AJ Hull following a timeout, setting off a mad scramble. Risung emerged with the ball, drove baseline and converted the shot. Seward, out of timeouts, pushed the ball up court but couldn't score as time expired.

"It was a good game," Felchle said. "Seward is a really good basketball team. They are fundamentally sound and they have a couple players who can really play basketball."

It was the fourth win in a row for the Kards, who defeated Homer 48-37 on the same floor Wednesday, and perhaps their most impressive of the season -- at least on paper.

The Alaska Sports Hall of Fame sports blog had the Seahawks ranked fourth in the state among Class 3A teams entering the game. Kenai Central, meanwhile, was unranked as a 4A squad.

"Absolutely it gives us a lot of confidence," Felchle said of winning the back-and-forth game. "We knew it was going to be a tough game."

Tyler Spalding led the Kards with 19 points, while Risung finished with 14.

Homer boys 66, Nikiski 59, OT

The Nikiski boys basketball team erased a 10-point deficit to force overtime, but was outscored 10-3 in the extra period in a 66-59 loss at home Thursday against Homer.

Nikiski coach Reid Kornstad said the team came to life on offense in the fourth quarter, scoring 24 points. Julien Harris hit a 3-pointer with less than a minute to play to give the Bulldogs a one-point lead. Teammate Lucas Herrin then missed the front end of a 1-and-1 chance from the free-throw line. Homer grabbed the rebound, drew a foul and converted 1-of-2 on the ensuing free throws to force overtime.

It was all Homer after that, with the Mariners hitting 6-of-8 from the line to hold on for the win on a night when Kornstad said there were 15 lead changes.

Devon Kennelty of Homer led all scorers with 30 points, while Harris and Herrin combined for 35 for Nikiski.

Homer knocked down 15-of-21 free throws, and Ashley Ketelle led all scorers with 19 points.
