Soldotna gets past Mariners

The Soldotna hockey team tuned up for a big matchup with Kenai Central tonight at 8:15 p.m. by defeating North Star Conference opponent Homer 7-0 on Thursday at the Soldotna Sports Center.

The Stars outshot the Mariners 42-14. Soldotna goalie William Granger made 14 saves for the shutout. Luke Eckert had 35 saves for the Mariners.

Eckert was at his best in the first period, when the Stars rolled up an 18-2 advantage on shots. Soldotna only came out of the period with a 1-0 lead, though. With 6:29 left in the first, Ty Anderson lit the lamp on assists from Nick Pokryfki and Matt Fellman.

The Stars then took control of the game in the second period with three goals. With 9:57 to play, Josh Kerkvliet scored on assists from Sean Endsley and Zack Waters. The same exact scoring combination pushed the score to 3-0 with 3:56 on the clock. Endsley closed out the scoring in the period when he tallied on an assist from Josh Harvey.

The Stars grabbed a 4-0 lead with 8:29 left in the game, then with 4:21 to play, Waters scored on an assist from Pokryfki. Endsley closed out the scoring on assists from Kerkvliet and Dalton Pearson with 1:18 to play.

The Mariners will host Kenai Central on Saturday at noon.
