Flags at half staff for former Coast Guard commandant

JUNEAU (AP) -- Gov. Tony Knowles ordered that state flags fly at half-staff Tuesday and Wednesday to honor Coast Guard Admiral John Hayes, who died Jan. 17. He was 76.

Hayes was the former commander of the 17th Coast Guard District in Juneau and commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Hayes was born in Jamestown, New York, in 1924 and graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1946.

He was promoted to commandant from 1978 to 1982. After retiring from active duty, he returned to Alaska to live in Anchorage. He later relocated to Boothbay Harbor, Maine. He died in a hospital in Islamorada, Fla. after being struck by a car while vacationing.
