Homer winter king tourney March 20

The Homer Chamber of Commerce's 11th annual Winter King Salmon Tournament will be March 20.

More information on the event, which takes place in Kachemak Bay, is available by calling the chamber at (907) 235-7740 or by visiting the Web site at www.homeralaska.org. Registration will begin in February.

Last year's tournament, in which 588 anglers participated, paid out over $47,000 in cash prizes as well as additional fishing merchandise.

Anglers caught 261 fish, with Soldotna's Greg Lindhartsen hooking the winner, a 28.58-pounder.

Kayak fest to return to Homer

The third annual Kachemak Kayak Fest will return to Homer for a 10-day run, from May 28 through June 6.

The festival features a broad range of activities and events for paddlers of all ages and abilities.

Refuge to host Winter Fun Day

The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge will host a Winter Fun Day on Feb. 7. Events are scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon at the visitors center on Ski Hill Road in Soldotna.

Activities will include family winter crafts and a guided snowshoe walk.

The refuge will provide snowshoes for the walk, but participants need to dress appropriately with warm clothes and boots. All activities are free of charge.

Mt. Marathon race applications available

Applications for the 2004 Mt. Marathon race are available from the Seward Chamber of Commerce. Call the Seward chamber at (907) 224-8051 or apply online at www.active.com. The application deadline is March 12.
