Senior night didn't mean much to the Skyview Panthers with no seniors on their roster, but the Kenai Kardinals spoiled Skyview's last regular-season hockey game. Kenai stole the show early and coasted to a 11-1 victory against the Panthers Friday night, at the Soldotna Sportscenter.
"We can play a lot better," said Skyview coach Pete Iverson, "We didn't approach the game well."
Kenai skated into the game and dominated early, netting three goals in the first period and allowing only three shots on goal for Skyview.
"We've stumbled before early on against Skyview," said Kenai coach Nate Kiel. "We wanted to establish our offensive game from the start and set the tone."
The first two periods, Skyview was under a constant barrage of offensive attacks from Kenai.
Skyview goalie Kyle Kirby did his best to keep up with Kenai as 40 shots were aimed toward him through the first two periods, but five goals snuck past Kirby in the second period as Kenai rode a commanding 8-0 lead into the final period.
A shot from Kenai's Kyle Coleman with 13:50 remaining in the third period showed the kind of night Kenai was having on the ice. Coleman lobbed an unassisted shot from near center ice through Skyview's defense that trickled into the net, slipping between Kirby's legs to push Kenai's lead to 9-0.
Skyview finally got on the board with just under six minutes to go on a shot from Luke Logan, but Kenai came back to score with four minutes left and again with 1:12 remaining to seal the win.
Coach Iverson felt his kids just weren't ready from the start of the game, but said that his team will build on the loss.
Kenai defeated Soldotna 3-2 to wrap up the regular season on Saturday.
