Eagles soar at Warrior Rumble

The Cook Inlet Academy Eagles swept the Warrior Rumble basketball tournament Saturday, knocking off the host Nikolaevsk Warriors boys and girls in the championship games.

On the girls' side, the Eagles overcame a slow start and used a big third quarter to pull away from the Warriors for a 33-24 win.

Aylse Bell led the Eagles with 17 points and Melissa Moffis added 11.

Nikki Melkomukov led Nikolaevsk with 13 points.

The Cook Inlet Academy boys attacked the Warriors early, allowing the Warriors to net only 14 points by halftime. The Eagles continued to cruise after the break and went on to win 65-37.

Brian Beeson led the Eagles with 20 points, while Andy Hall and Jeremy Franchino each netted 13.

The Warriors were led by Stephan Nikitenko's 20 points. Nikitenko scored 16 of his team's 23 second-half points in the losing effort.

On Friday, the Eagles and the Nikolaevsk boys and girls basketball teams each advanced at the four-team tournament.

The CIA girls beat Matanuska Christian 32-15. Alyse Bell led the Eagles in scoring with 12 points as CIA held their opponents to only five field goals the entire game.

The host Nikolaevsk Warriors girls beat Fort Yukon 46-31 behind a balanced scoring effort. The Warriors put the clamps on Fort Yukon defensively after a high-scoring first quarter and coasted to victory.

In boys action, the Cook Inlet Academy Eagles beat Matanuska Christian in dominating fashion, 66-33. Andy Hall led the Eagles with a game-high 23 points, with 11 coming in a solid second quarter where CIA pulled away and never looked back.

The Nikolaevsk boys team followed up their girls as well, knocking off Fort Yukon 63-48. Stephan Nikitenko led the Warriors with 25 points, while Anecta Kalugin added 23.
