Aniak girls, boys capture Rumble titles

The Nikolaevsk girls basketball team finished 1-2 and the boys went 0-3 at the ConocoPhillips/Warrior Rumble at Nikolaevsk. The Aniak boys and girls both finished 3-0 to win championships.

Nikolaevsk topped the Valley Christian girls 55-24 on Friday before losing to Susitna Valley 47-28 on Saturday.

Nianiella Dorvall had 15 points to lead the Warriors on Friday, while Sarah Holub had 14 points and Sophia Kalugin added 10 points. For the Bears, Gerriann Kruger had 11 points. On Saturday, Kalugin had a team-high 10 points.

In other Friday girls action, Aniak edged Su Valley 44-42. Janell Morgan had 21 points to lead Aniak, while Trisha Morgan had 13 points. Aniak then beat Valley Christian 60-37 on Saturday to win the title.

Meanwhile, the Valley Christian boys defeated Nikolaevsk 54-50 on Friday. Valley Christian led 36-30 at halftime, but Nikolaevsk cut the lead to 44-43 at the end of the third quarter.

Philip Ling had 16 points for the Bears, while Darrell Pine had 14 points. For Nikolaevsk, Blake Klaich had 19 points, while Mark Fefelov had 12 points. On Saturday, the Warriors fell 61-49 against Su Valley. Fefelov scored 22 points.

In other Friday boys action, Aniak cruised past Susitna Valley 65-47. Bruce Morgan led Aniak with 17 points, while Harry Morgan had 16 points and Dakota Philips added 15 points. For Susitna Valley, Mitch Drover had 15 points, Elias Curtis had 12 points and Dylan Figley had 11 points.

Aniak beat Valley Christian 86-40 on Saturday to win the title.

Three Nikolaevsk girls -- Holub, Kalugin and Kilina Klaich -- were named to the all-tournament team. Su Valley's Morgan was named the tournamen't Most Valuable Player.

Blake Klaich, Anthony Yakunin and Fefelov represnted the Nikolaevsk boys on the all-tournament squad. Fefelov was the MVP for the boys.

Cordova Tipoff

The Ninilchik girls finished 0-3 at the Cordova Tipoff, falling to Petersburg 55-21 Friday and to Pt. Hope 80-19 Saturday. Pt. Hope finished the tournament 3-0 to win the championship.

The Ninilchik boys squad also was winless, losing to Klawock 66-42 Friday and to Pt. Hope 81-39 Saturday.

Seward boys 61, Nikiski 40

Keenan Prochazka, Andrew Buchanan and Michael Thorn scored 16 points apiece on their home floor, leading the Seward boys basketball team to a 61-40 Southcentral Conference victory against Nikiski on Saturday.

Colton Anderson and Julien Harris paced the Bulldogs with 12 points each.

Seward girls 51, Nikiski 39

Seward's Meg Berry led all scorers with 18 points as the Seahawks earned a 51-39 win over Nikiski in Southcentral Conference action Saturday at Seward.

Savannah Griffel scored a team-high 13 for the Bulldogs.

Kenai Central boys JV 48, Cook Inlet Academy varsity 40

Cook Inlet's varsity squad played without David Reischach in a 48-40 loss to Kenai Central's junior varsity unit Saturday at Skyview.

Kenai Central held a 40-24 advantage in rebounds. Matthew Moffis scored 15 and Tyler Solie added 14 for the Eagles, who defeated Soldotna's JV team Friday.

The Eagles visit Lumen Christi on Friday.
