Search for counterfeit money takes turn for the humorous

Posted: Thursday, January 31, 2002

The fact that most businesses are more alert to counterfeit money these days has been turning up some more pleasing sidelines.

AlaskaLanes Family Bowling Center in Kenai reported the possibility of a counterfeit $10 bill to the Kenai Police Department. Later, when questioned, Officer Chuck Kopp stated that the "phony" bill was actually a 1950s gold standard, worth approximately $50 to $60.

"The bill's aged appearance made it seem counterfeit to the people who called us," said Officer Kopp. "The bill was actually a collector's item."
