Women bring talents to Alaska's Junior Miss

Posted: Monday, January 31, 2005

Eighteen young women from around the state will have their hands full in Soldotna this week as they prepare to compete for the title of 2005 Alaska's Junior Miss and the scholarship opportunities that go along with it.

The women hail from as far away as Nome and Petersburg to as close as right here on the central Kenai Peninsula. To be a Junior Miss competitor, the women must be high school seniors and excel in academics as well as other areas.

After their week of getting to know each other, a seminar about getting to know themselves and hours upon hours of rehearsals, the women will compete at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Soldotna High School Auditorium.

The competition includes fitness and interview portions as well as talent performances by the women. Soldotna's Kaitlin Vadla, 2004 Alaska's Junior Miss, will emcee the competition. A panel of five judges will evaluate the contestants in the categories of scholastics, interviews, talent, fitness and self expression.

Contestants will compete for a share in $9,050 in cash scholarships and a variety of college-granted scholarships including $18,000 in presidential scholarships from the University of Alaska Anchorage. The woman named 2005 Alaska's Junior Miss will receive a $3,000 cash scholarship award and will go on to compete in the America's Junior Miss national finals in June in Mobile, Ala.

Tickets for Saturday's performance are $8 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Following are the contestants from the peninsula:
