The following is a list of Homer and Soldotna Community Schools classes and activities beginning this week. It is printed as a reminder to preregistered participants. For more information, call 262-6768 for Soldotna or (907) 235-6090 for Homer.

SoldotnaCommunity Schools

Silk painting

Joyce Cox, instructor, will teach participants to paint two scarves. Additional scarves will be available. No artistic ability is needed. The class is from 6 to 9 p.m. today and Thursday in the art room at Soldotna Middle School. It is for adults. There is a six-person minimum and a 12-person maximum. The cost is $40. Supplies are included.

Car care 101

Ryan Nelson of Kenai Auto Care will instruct. Class will cover basic vehicle maintenance and safety. Participants will learn how to hook up jumper cables, change a tire safely, do fluid checks, headlight and bulb replacement and wiper blade replacement and conduct a bumper to bumper safety check. A discussion of what to do if you are in an accident and additional topics will be addressed as time permits. The class is from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Skyview High School auto shop. For ages 16 and up. There is a three-person minimum and eight-person maximum. The cost is $15.

Astronomy for the amateur

Andy Veh, astronomy and physics professor, will instruct. This class will include lectures and observation nights. During lectures, topics will be seasons, the phases of the moon, eclipses and planetary motions. There will be time for questions. During observations, students will use amateur telescopes to identify and observe planets, constellations, starts and deep sky objects such as galaxies. The class starts from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and continues Feb. 15 and March 1 and 15 in room 117 at Kenai Peninsula College. The cost is $15.

Coil basket making

Sandra Lewis, art teacher, will instruct students in the method of coil basket making. The coil method can be applied to creating all types of unique and creative baskets. Materials are covered by the class fee. Outside work will be needed to complete the basket by the end of the second class. The class is from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Feb. 9 in the home economics room at Soldotna Middle School. For ages 16 and up. There is a three-person minimum and 10-person maximum. The cost is $25.

Dreams — understanding them and using them for problem solving

Dr. Kathleen Dinius, Ph.D., licensed psychologist, will instruct. Learn how to decode dreams and apply them to your working life. The class is from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the library at Soldotna Middle School. For teens and adults. The cost is $10.

Homer Community Schools

Children's play group

Parents and children up to 5 years old are welcome to play Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon at the Boys and Girls Club. The cost is $5 per session (fall, winter and spring) and will run throughout the school year. Sign up at the door. For more information, call Sharon Gorman at 235-0531. Volunteers are needed to help with supervision.

In Shin Jyutsu physio-philosophy

This class is on the ancient art of harmonizing the life energy in the body. For those wishing to address existing stress or health disharmonies, or those simply wishing to participate actively in maintaining health, harmony and well-being. It is a self-help class. There is a minimum of four and a maximum of 10 people for the class. A book is available through the instructor. Sign up in advance. There will be two separate classes offered from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday and Wednesday at Homer High School. The cost is $25 plus a $10 Homer Community School fee.

New classes wanted
