Youth production tryouts planned

Central Kenai Peninsula youths are encouraged to sign up for the Boys and Girls Club Winter Youth Drama production of "Pinocchio and the Fire Eater" and folk and fairy tales from "In One Basket."

"Pinocchio and the Fire Eater" is open to youths ages 5 to 18 and includes a traveling carnival troupe, dancing puppet dolls, musicians, clowns, a peddler, audience children and the main characters.

"In One Basket" has parts for youths ages 12 to 18. The folk and fairy tales are told in theater fashion, where the actors play both narrator and character.

Reading for parts will be held at the club Monday and Tuesday at 7 p.m. Everyone who signs up will get a part. Rehearsals will be held three nights a week during February and March. The performance is scheduled for mid-April.

Community chorus to meet

The Soldotna Community Chorus is looking for members. The chorus meets Tuesdays in the Soldotna Middle School music room. The children's chorus meets from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. with adults meeting from 8 to 9 p.m. No experience is necessary, and beginners are welcome. For more information, call 262-6768.

Kids lip sync contest planned

This year's Showin' Off the Kids lip sync and choreography contest, sponsored by Soldotna Community Schools, is scheduled for Feb. 24 at Soldotna High School.

The annual competition is for kids in kindergarten through eighth grade. Applications, which need to include a two-minute audio tape, are available at the Soldotna Dairy Queen.

Applications have been distributed to schools. The deadline for applications and taped selections is Wednesday. A mandatory practice will be held Feb. 22 at 4 p.m. at the school.

Hospice event planned

Hospice of the Central Peninsula will present an auction and wine tasting event at 7 p.m. Feb. 10 at the Soldotna Senior Center. Tickets cost $37.50 per person and may be purchased by calling 262-0453.

Raffles and a silent auction will be held with all proceeds going toward hospice programs and services.

Authors to visit Kenai, Soldotna

The Kenai Community Library will host two writers in February, in conjunction with Left Coast Crime, a national mystery convention scheduled in Anchorage Feb. 15-18.

S.J. Rozan, author of "No Colder Place" and "Stone Quarry," will give a reading and writing discussion Feb. 14 at 6:30 p.m.

L.C. Hayden, author of "Who's Susan?" and "When Colette Died," will be on hand Feb. 20 at 6:30 p.m.

Rozan also will do a reading Feb. 13 at 5 p.m. at River City Books in Soldotna, and Hayden will read there Feb. 19 at 5 p.m.

Both authors plan to visit area schools.
