Bereavement support group meets
Hospice of the Central Peninsula is hosting a 9-week, free of charge, bereavement support group for those with any kind of loss. The group will meet on Wednesdays from 5 -- 6:30 p.m. beginning March 16. Please contact hospice at 262-0453 for more information.
Cardiac patient support group meets
WomenHeart of Central Kenai Peninsula hosts its patient support group on Feb. 7 at Central Peninsula Hospital in the Mt. Redoubt meeting room, Lower Level, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Our speaker will be a representative from Soldotna Pharmacy who will speak on cardiac medications. Call Sharen Sleater at 262-7913 to RSVP.
Teen dance in Nikiski
North Peninsula Recreation hosts a Middle School Teen Dance for 7th-9th graders on Feb. 11 from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Nikiski Community Recreation Center Banquet Room. For more information please call 776-8800.
Nonprofit heads meet for breakfast
Executive directors of nonprofit organizations are invited to a no-host breakfast at Charlotte's Restaurant in Kenai on Friday at 8 a.m. The purpose is to discuss mutual administrative interests such as event dates, media freebies and upcoming seminars. Learn to swim in Nikiski
Nikiski Pool's second set of winter swim lessons run Feb. 22 to March 10. Beginners meet at 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., Tiny Tots meet at 2 p.m. and Intermediates meet at 4 p.m. Sign-ups start Feb. 14 at 4 p.m. at Nikiski Pool. There is also space available also in Competitive Swim Class starting March 22, and American Red Cross Lifeguard Class starting Feb. 22. For more information call Nigel at 776-8800.
Winter fun in the refuge
The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge hosts snowshoe walks and ski treks this week. All activities are free, but please pre-register with Michelle Ostrowski at 260-2839. Snowshoes are provided for the snowshoe walks, but bring your own equipment for the ski treks.
Snowshoers and skiers both meet at noon on Wednesday.
Boys and Girls Club soccer coming
The Boys and Girls Club is accepting registrations for indoor soccer youth ages 4 years to 5th grade. The child must be 4 by Feb. 4. The season runs from March 21 to May 7. Cost is $60, and the child must be a 2011 member. Membership cost is $10 for kindergarten and under, $75 for 1st to 5th grades. The registration deadline is Feb. 4 at 4 p.m. Registrations are taken at the Kenai Recreation Center, or fax them to 283-4675. For more information, call 283-3318.
Bike spin classes available
The Nikiski Community Recreation Center is offering Bicycle Spin Classes on Wednesdays and Saturdays. January's special is two for the price of one. Please call for 776-8800 for more information and class times.
Singles meet up
A peninsula singles activity group is forming. The group will enjoy food, coffee and other adventures. The first two gatherings are scheduled for Feb. 6 and Feb. 20 from 2 to 5 p.m. Call Bobbie at 740-0832 or 260-5353 for the meeting location and more information.
Brown Bears go pink for cancer awareness
The Kenai River Brown Bears hockey team will don special edition pink jerseys as they do battle with in-state rival, the Fairbanks Ice Dogs, on Feb. 4 and 5. The pink game-worn jerseys will be auctioned during intermissions, with the proceeds going to benefit the Central Peninsula Health Foundation and local cancer patients on the Kenai Peninsula. Both games begin at 7:30 p.m.
More high tunnel tech
The Central Peninsula Garden Club hosts a seminar on high tunnels and the USDA cost-share program on Tuesday at 7 p.m., at the Cook Inlet Aquaculture Building on K-Beach Road, near the Bridge Access intersection. Habitat for Humanity opens 2011 applications
Central Peninsula Habitat for Humanity has opened the application period for the 2011 summer build. Applications will be accepted throughout February. Please contact Sharon, at 262-7534, for more information about qualifications and an application.
Masters swim team hits pool
The Kenai masters swim team swims from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday at the Kenai Central High School pool. The group is open to swimmers over the age of 18. There is a $69 annual registration fee, and $50 montly fee. For more information, contact Will Hubler or Jenn Ticknor at 283-7476.
