HAMILTON, Bermuda (AP) -- Bermuda's Anglican church may allow women to become priests as part of an effort to recruit more clergy.
Bishop Ewen Ratteray said in the January diocese newsletter that he had set up a commission to consider allowing female priests, partly because fewer young men are joining the priesthood.
''The average age of the present clergy is high -- none of us is getting any younger though we are reasonably fit,'' Ratteray said. ''Something needs to be done to address the situation.''
The Anglican church is the largest in Bermuda, with a membership encompassing about a quarter of the British territory's 62,000 residents.
