Community Schools

The following list of Soldotna Community Schools classes and activities beginning this week is printed as a reminder to registered participants. Anyone interested in a class or activity should call the Soldotna Community School at 262-6768.

Tuesday

Japanese Conversation and Culture with Mayuni Yeager. This is a beginner class to learn to speak Japanese and learn about the culture.The class will meet for four weeks from 6 to 6:40 p.m. at Soldotna Middle School, room 25. All ages are welcome. There is a three-person minimum and 10-person maximum. Cost is $30.

Latin Dance Salsa and Merenque with Mayumi Yeager. Latin dance is a great way to have fun and lose weight. The class will teach beginning basic salsa and merenque steps and movement. The class will meet for four weeks from 7 to 8 p.m. at Soldotna Middle School's multipurpose room. Teens and adults are welcome. There is a three-person minimum and 15-person maximum. Cost is $40.

Wednesday

Couples Communication for Men (Understanding Women) with Dr. Kathleen Dinius, licensed psychologist. The class will explore such questions as: Do women speak a different language or are they just all emotion? Do you feel like you're always in a hole and never on level ground when dealing with a woman? Why can't she be objective and just get to the point of the matter? The class meets for one night from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Soldotna Middle School conference room. It is for adults only. Cost is $15 or $20 for both couples communication classes; the second class Couples Communication for Women (Understanding Men) is scheduled for Feb. 11.

Coil Basket with Sandra Lewis, art teacher. It's not only relaxing, it's rewarding. Participants will learn the method of coil basket-making and create a basket in this two-week class. The coil method learned can be applied to creating all types of unique and creative baskets. Materials are covered by the class fee. Outside class work will be needed to complete the basket by the end of the second class. The class will meet for two weeks from 7 to 9 p.m. at Soldotna Middle School, room 6. Ages 16 years old to adult are welcome. There is a three-person minimum and 10-person maximum. Cost is $25.

Women's Self-defense with Ray Purugganan, second-degree black belt in karate and John Holland. Participants should wear sweats, shoes, something comfortable and bring a notebook. The class will meet every other Wednesday, beginning this week and ending April 14. There will be six sessions from 7 to 8 p.m. at Soldotna Middle School's multipurpose room. Ages 12 to adult are welcome. Cost is $20.

Note: Watch for applications for Showin' Off the Kids annual lip sync and choreography contest for students in kindergarten through eighth grades. Applications have been sent to schools. The required application and two-minute casette tape must be dropped off at the Dairy Queen by Feb. 29 to appear in the program. For more information, call office at 262-6768.M/i>
