School funding issue too important to ignore

Posted: Wednesday, February 02, 2005

As a member of this community, I am writing to express my concerns about the inadequate state funding for Alaskan schools and the effect it is having on our local district and ultimately all of our children.

Districts across Alaska are continually faced with mandates that are underfunded. Our district is no exception. Without an increase in funding from the state, the quality of education for our children will be jeopardized.

We need to take action now in order to convince the governor and legislators that enough is enough. Schools need adequate funding to keep up with the cost of doing business. In Alaska, the permanent fund is inflation proofed and yet funding for schools is not. The Legislature needs to understand that our children deserve better.

On Thursday, Feb. 3 from 6 to 7 p.m. the Kenai Peninsula legislators will hold their first monthly constituent meeting of the current session. Anyone can call in from either the legislative information office in their community, or from their homes, to give their opinions to our legislators. Please find time to let Senator Tom Wagoner, Representative Mike Chenault, Represenative Kurt Olson, Representative Paul Seaton and Senator Gary Stevens know how you feel about funding for schools.

The toll free call in number is: (800) 395-5073.
