Nikiski basketball teams notch sweep of Seward

Posted: Sunday, February 03, 2002

The Nikiski boys and girls basketball teams both picked up victories over District 3/3A rival Seward Friday night.

The Bulldogs girls notched a 52-37 victory after trailing 12-4 at the end of the first quarter.

Sally Glaze dumped in 18 points for Nikiski, while Karen Rabung and Amanda Weaver had 13 points apiece. For Seward, Willow Hetrick had 11 points while Tara DeRuwe and Michelle Dieckgraeff had six points each.

Seward was leading Nikiski in the third quarter until DeRuwe went out with an injured ankle.

Seward coach Roger Steinbrecher said fouls hurt his team, too. Nikiski was 11-of-26 from the foul line, while Seward was 2-of-7 from the charity stripe.

The Nikiski boys defeated Seward 71-60 behind 26 points from David Holloway. Ryan Bowlin added 11 for the Bulldogs, while Jason Gerke had nine points.

Nikiski coach Reid Kornstad said his team played well on defense in the second half, and that fueled the offense. Nikiski had 23 points in the third quarter and 22 points in the fourth quarter.

Foul shots also were big for the Bulldogs. Nikiski was 18-of-25 from the charity stripe, with Holloway going 8-for-9 and Bowlin hitting 7-of-8. Kornstad also said Rustin Hitchcock and Kevin Gerke provided big minutes off the bench.
