The following is a list of Soldotna Community Schools classes and activities beginning this week. It is printed to serve as a reminder to registered participants. If you are interested in a class but are not preregistered, call the Soldotna Community Schools office at 262-6768.
Spanish with Gnel Khachatryan -- Learn to speak and understand Spanish from a native speaker. The class will include basic fundamentals, such as grammar, vocabulary, listening and reading. It is open to participants ages 7 and up. The class will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays for four weeks, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Soldotna Middle School room 1. The cost is $45.
Financial Strategies for Successful Retirement with Milo Jurik of Summit Brokerage -- The class will cover basic investment and an introduction to stocks, bonds, mutual funds, risk management and estate planning. It is open to teens and adults. The class will meet for three weeks, from 6:30 to 9:45 p.m. in the Soldotna Middle School library. The cost is $40 for preregistered individuals or couples and $60 for singles and couples on a walk-in basis.
Investing Basics with Matt Streiff of Edwards Jones Investments, Kenai -- This seminar will cover how to examine your current financial situation, control taxes and identify and manage investment risk. It is open to participants 20 and older, and there is a 20-person maximum. The class will meet for two weeks, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Soldotna Middle School room 2. The cost is $10 per person or $15 for couples.
Batiking with Joyce Cox, Girl Scout field executive -- Learn how to batik on fabric and on paper using resists, dyes, paints and other materials. There will be a class for children in kindergarten through third grade from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or for fourth grade through ninth grade from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Each class has a 10-person minimum and 15-person maximum and will meet in the Kenai Peninsula College art room. The cost is $20.
New Mexican Chili and Chicken Enchiladas with Margaret Saiz -- Learn to make New Mexican chili with chili pods and chicken enchiladas to take home. Participants need to bring a 9-by-13-inch pan. There is an eight-person minimum and 16-person maximum, and the class is open to adults only. It will meet from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Soldotna Middle School home economics room. The cost is $20 per person or $30 per couple sharing a pan.
Kids Winter Craft Fair -- There will be make-it-and-take-it crafts for children in kindergarten through sixth grade from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Soldotna Middle School multipurpose room. The fair is co-sponsored by the Skyview High School National Honor Society and is free.
Family Fun Day -- There will be an afternoon of free sledding, ice skating, indoor wall climbing, swimming and cross-country skiing, as well as a bonfire and hot cocoa at Skyview High School. The event is co-sponsored by the Tsalteshi Trail Association and Skyview High School and is free.

Registration is continuing for the following classes: Tours of the Homer News, the post office and the fire station; Popeye wrestling; Telemark ski clinic; and financial strategies for successful retirement.
A new class has been added to the winter program. Mardi Gras Masks for Winter Carnival is a workshop in mask making. It meets from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, and the cost is $15.
There are two changes to the winter schedule. The preschool playgroup will meet from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday and Friday at the Boys and Girls Club. The CPR-first aid class scheduled for March 8 has been moved to March 29.
Planning is beginning for the spring session of classes. Anyone who would like to teach a class or who has a request is asked to call the office.
