High school mass choir set

Kenai Peninsula Borough School District high school mass choir festival will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Renee C. Henderson Auditorium in Kenai. Three hundred thirty students from Cook Inlet Academy, Homer, Kenai Central, Nikiski, Ninilchik, Skyview and Soldotna high schools will sing under the direction of Dr. Christopher Aspaas, professor of music, from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. The concert will feature the individual choirs performing two numbers in addition to the mass choir's performance with Dr. Aspaas. A special performance by 2004 Kenai Central graduate Shelah Moreno-Jones and Maria Allison playing Gershwin's Concerto in F also will be performed. Moreno-Jones won the concerto competition last fall at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks and performed with the Fairbanks Symphony in December. Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for senior citizens and students.

Potatoes to be discussed

Central Peninsula Garden Club will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Cook Inlet Aquaculture Building on Kalifornsky Beach Road near the Bridge Access Road intersection.

Jeff Smeenk, University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension specialist in commercial horticulture will be the featured speaker. His topic, "Potatoes and More Potatoes," will include information from his research and survey work on potatoes, soil quality enhancement and non-herbicide methods of week control in potato growing. There will be 15 varieties of potatoes for taste testing.

Teen dance slated

The Teen Center in Kenai will hold a Valentines dance for high school students from 7 to 10 p.m. Feb. 15. The cost will be $5 for those students who are not members of the Boys and Girls Club or $4 for members and $3 for students that bring in a filled out registration form and $20 membership fee. Star party planned

The Challenger Learning Center of Alaska will host a star party at 7 p.m. Feb. 29. Community members are invited to see the night sky through a telescope. For more information, call Kathy at 283-2000.
