Community Schools

This listing of Soldotna Community School classes beginning this week serves as a reminder for preregistered participants. Most classes require preregistration and prepayment. If you did NOT preregister, please call the Soldotna Community School office, at 262-6768, to check on cancellations and confirm your attendance. Details about each class can be found in the Fall/Winter 2002 Soldotna Community School brochure, which is available at Soldotna and Kenai public libraries, the city of Soldotna and the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District.

Note: Children are not allowed to attend an adult class or to wait unattended while a parent attends a class.


Locker Notes/Memory Album Making

With Carrie Henson, creative memories consultant. Bring three to five photos about yourself and learn to preserve childhood memories by putting together a memory album page. One night, 6:30 to 8 p.m., 8 to 13 years, two-person minimum, 15 maximum, Soldotna Middle School home economics room, $10.


Single/Single Again

With Dr. Kathleen Dinius, Dr. Marge Hays, Lisa Wells Turner and Dr. Paul Turner. Explore how to be healthy and happy as a single person. This week's topic is "Impact of divorce on children, blended families, etc." with Lisa Wells Turner.

Four weeks, 7 to 9 p.m., adults, Soldotna Middle School, room 4, $20 full series or $5 per night. "Building New Relationships," with Dr. Marge Hays, originally scheduled for Jan. 30, is postponed to Feb. 27.


Wills, Probate and Powers of Attorney

With Janet Tempel, attorney. Who gets the kids? Who gets the dog? Who gets the "stuff?" What about second marriages? What if you're single? If you don't write your own will, the state will provide one for you, and the results may surprise you. In addition to simple wills, this class will also cover probate, powers of attorney and living wills. One night, 6 to 8 p.m., teens and adults, Soldotna Middle School, room 9, $20 per person, $25 per couple.


Snowmachine, Avalanche and Backcountry Preparedness

With Joe and Shelia Westfall, founders of Alaska Snowmachine Search, Rescue and Recovery Team, member of Alaska State Snowmachine Association. Snowmachine, avalanche awareness and self rescue.

Backcountry essentials and required equipment for day, extended and long snowmachine trips. One night, 6 to 10 p.m., adults, Soldotna Middle School gym, no fee.


"Eddie Eagle" Gun Safety (for kids)

With Rod Christopher, Peninsula Weapons Academy. Basic gun education. One day, 1 to 4 p.m., 6 to 10 years, six-person minimum, 15 maximum, Kenai Recreational Center conference room, $10.

Children's Snowmachine Safety Event

One day, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Soldotna Middle School, no fee.
