South boys come from behind to beat Kenai

After trailing after each of the first three quarters, South came back to defeat Kenai Central 69-64 on Saturday in a nonconference basketball game.

The Wolverines outscored the Kardinals 19-12 in the final frame for the victory. Aaron Stevens paced South with 22 points, while Trevor Smith had 18, Anthony Cousin had 16 and DJ Cousin had 12.

For Kenai, Nate Byrd had 19 points while Cory Toombs had 15 and Nate Saltzgiver had 10.

Kenai Central girls 43, Seward 22

Adrianna Garcia had a game-high 12 points as the Kardinals topped the Seahawks on Friday in nonconference action.

Seward took an 11-6 lead after the first quarter, but then scored 11 points the rest of the game. Rubye Foldager paced the Seahawks with 11 points.

Kenai Central boys 72, Seward 68

Cory Toombs had 24 points and Nate Byrd added 21 for the Kardinals as Kenai overcame a 35-point effort by Robert Perea to win the nonconference contest.

Seward had a 53-52 advantage going into the final quarter. Daniel Gustkey had 17 points for Kenai, while Travis Price added 19 for Seward.

South boys 71, Homer 45

The Wolverines grabbed a 26-10 lead after the first quarter en route to the nonconference victory.

Trevor Smith had 18 points for the Wolverines, while Anthony Cousin added 10. For Homer, Colten Tutt had 18 points, while Dean DeVaney pitched in 14 points.

CIA boys 72, Kalskag 61

The host Eagles outscored Kalskag 27-15 in the second quarter and made that advantage stand up for the rest of the game for a nonconference victory.

Scott Litchfield had 22 points for Cook Inlet Academy, while Ryan Doyle had 17 and Eric Bell added 14. For Kalskag, Robbie Reed had 20 points and Wayne Holmberg added 12 points.

Dimond Lady Lynx Tournament

The Homer girls dropped three games at the tourney.

On Thursday, Homer fell 58-29 against Dimond. Reba Temple led the Mariners with 10 points while Keiahnna Engle paced Dimond with 30.

The Mariners fought hard against Service on Friday, but were outscored 16-9 in the second period and lost 59-55. Temple again led Homer with 21 points while Chandra Carr added eight. Led by 16 points from Erin Burks, the Cougars had four players reach double-digits.

Homer then dropped a 59-32 decision to West Valley on Saturday. Temple scored a team-high 10 points while Violet Kakinya netted 22 for the Wolfpack.
