Juneau-Douglas rips Kardinals

Juneau-Douglas built an 11-point lead through eight minutes and never looked back in dismantling the Kenai Central girls basketball team 64-24 on the second day of the 2011 Dimond Lady Lynx Prep Shootout Tournament on Thursday at Dimond High School.

Sarah Tarver scored a game-high 19 points to lead Juneau, while Raquel Young posted a team-best 11 for Kenai Central.

The Kards face West Valley at 2:45 p.m. today.

Nenana Invitational Tournament

Blake Klaich scored 25 points and Eric Mametieff added 23 as the Nikolaevsk boys basketball team defeated Fort Yukon 74-27 Thursday in the first round of the Nenana Invitational Tournament.

Klaich hit four 3-pointers, and Mametieff scored 15 of his 23 in the second half. Nikolaevsk faces Nenana at 8 p.m. today.

In other boys action, Nenana beat Minto 49-38. Su-Valley defeated Anderson 47-21. Tri-Valley cruised to a 73-33 victory over Northway.

Meanwhile, the Nikolaevsk girls dropped a first-round contest against Tri-Valley, 60-47.

Nianella Dorval and Sophia Kalugin combined for 30 points to lead the Warriors, who face host Nenana in the consolation bracket at 11 a.m. today.

In other girls action, Port Lions defeated Northway 49-41, while Fort Yukon edged Su-Valley 40-37. Nenana blasted Minto 68-18.

Barrow Whaler Invitational

Evan Withrow scored 14 points, but it wasn't enough as the Soldotna boys basketball team opened the Barrow Whaler Invitational at Barrow with a 60-36 loss against the host school.

Tyler Adams paced Barrow, leading all scorers with 17 points.

SoHi faces Cordova at 5:30 p.m. today and Kenai Central at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Kenai Central boys also dropped their opener, losing 60-46 against Cordova.

Kai Risung had 16 points for the Kards. AJ Hull added seven. The Kards face Barrow at 8:30 p.m. today.

On the girls side, Homer opened with a 68-22 loss against Barrow. Ashley Ketelle led Homer with eight points.

The Mariners play Cordova at 4 p.m. today and West at 2 p.m. Saturday.

West defeated Cordova 43-27 in the other girls game.

Seward Basketball Classic

The Skyview boys earned a 51-45 victory over Houston to open the Seward Basketball Classic at Seward.

Albert White scored 15 points for Skyview, which outscored Houston 10-2 over the final four minutes. The Panthers face Seward at 8:15 p.m. today and Delta at 11:45 a.m. Saturday.

The Skyview girls, meanwhile, fell 45-31 to Houston in their opener.

Jaxon Hill posted 16 points for the Panthers, who face Seward at 6:30 p.m. today and Delta at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Results from the Seward-Delta boys and girls games were unavailable when the Clarion went to press.
