Ping pong tourney results

The results of the Soldotna Elks Club weekly ping pong tournament are:

First place: Skip Dove and Michel Ehlers

Second place: Gary Brumley and Frank Cloyd

Third place: Wayne Brooks and Robert Blakenship

Fourth place: Andy Szczesny and Joe Szczesny

The tournament, held every Wednesday night at the Elks Club in Soldotna, is open to anyone who'd like to play. There is a $5 entry fee, and partners are drawn at random before play begins. For more information, call Ray Debardelaben at 262-7415.

Alumni from 1981 sought

Alumni from the classes of 1981 from Kenai and Soldotna are being sought for a class reunion, and volunteers are needed for planning the event. The next meeting will be at noon Saturday at Paradisos restaurant in Kenai. The organizers are looking for contact information of classmates not living on the peninsula.

New Alaska Junior Miss crowned

Kara Merrill of Soldotna High School is the new Alaska Junior Miss following the 2001 competition Jan. 27 at Kenai Central High School. Merrill pockets a $2,000 cash scholarship for her win. She won an additional $1,000 cash scholarship for the overall scholastic award.

Breeana Giddings (East Anchorage HS) was named first runner-up and the winner of a $1,000 cash scholarship, and Krystle Michaels (Nikiski HS), Cameron O'Connell (Cook Inlet Academy) and Sharisse Stroud (West Anchorage HS) were all named finalists and each won a $500 cash scholarship.

Other winners were: Sierra Mello (SoHi), Overall Talent Award, $1,000 cash scholarship; Michaels, Overall Fitness Award, $1,000 cash scholarship; Giddings, Overall Poise Award, $1,000 cash scholarship; Raina Thiele (Houston HS), Marti Steckel "Spirit of Junior Miss" Award, $500 cash scholarship; Diana Duez (North Pole HS), "Be Your Best Self" Essay Award, $250 cash scholarship.
