FAIRBANKS (AP) -- Two Fairbanks men were arrested early Monday for allegedly trying to steal a 500-pound safe from the Fairbanks Moose Lodge.

Roger Yost, 40, and William Isberg, 40, were charged with burglary, criminal mischief, theft and attempted theft.

Investigators were baffled as to what the two were planning to do with the heavy safe, since they rode to the lodge on bicycles. They had managed to move the safe a just few feet when police arrived at the lodge, shortly before 2 a.m.

The two men are also suspected of trying to breaking into a downtown Fairbanks spa shortly before the incident at the Moose Lodge, police said.

The two men were being held at the Fairbanks Correctional Center on $20,000 bail.
