Wards Cove tells fishermen to pack up, pay up

Posted: Wednesday, February 05, 2003

DILLINGHAM (AP) -- The Wards Cove Packing Company is telling fishermen from Seattle to Egegik that it's time to settle up their accounts and move their gear off company property.

The company announced in December that it was getting out of the salmon business after several years of losses.

Company officials are now asking fishermen who fished for Wards Cove to pay off any loans by April 1 and move their boats and gear off Wards Cove property by July 31.

Fishermen who have gear stored at the company's Seattle boatyard are being asked to remove it by Feb. 28.

The company says it will write off 20 percent of account balances for those who pay off their debts by April 1. The fleet's insurance will expire April 1.
