Chamber to discuss future work force

Colleen Ward of XCEL will speak on Kenai's future work force at the Kenai Chamber of Commerce's weekly meeting at noon today at Paradisos. The meeting is open to the public. The cost is $10.50 with lunch. For more information, call 283-7989.

Ice fishing derby has begun

Soldotna Trustworthy Hardware's sixth annual ice fishing derby will be held through Feb. 28. Prizes will be awarded in more than 25 divisions, including largest fish and age-group prizes. Participants must first sign up at Trustworthy Hardware, but there is no registration fee. For more information, call 262-4655.

Trooper to speak at North chamber

Capt. Tom Bowman of the Alaska State Troopers will be the featured speaker at the North Peninsula Chamber of Commerce meeting, starting at noon Thursday at North Kenai Baptists Church. The public is invited. For more information, call 776-3250.

League of Women Voters to meet

The League of Women Voters will meet at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Vintage Moose. The public is invited.

Celebration planned for Seward centennial

In tribute to its 2003 centennial, Seward will host a history symposium: "The End of the Other Road: What Trails Have We Taken," on Friday and Saturday. The weekend begins 7 p.m. Friday at the William H. Seward Elementary School, featuring a premier of "Alaska Nellie," written by Doug Capra, and a living wax museum by students of Marc Swanson. The symposium on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Seward Middle-Senior High School, includes lectures, discussions, interactive exhibits, a book store and an authors' book signing reception. Mike Doogan will close the symposium with a 7 p.m. lecture. Visit for more details.

Family Fun Day canceled

The Family Fun Day scheduled for Sunday at Skyview High School has been canceled due to poor weather conditions and safety concerns.

Lip sync contest planned

Applications for the 2003 Soldotna Community Schools "Showin' Off the Kids" lip sync and choreography contest are available at area elementary and middle schools. Applications, along with a two-minute music tape, must be returned to Dairy Queen in Soldotna by March 1. The contest will be held March 15. For more information, call 262-6768.
