DTP boosters available, required

Due to a previous vaccine shortage, many middle and high school students have not received their tetanus-diptheria booster shot. The booster is due 10 years after the last DTP or DTaP, usually around the age of 14 or 15. The vaccine now is available at any public health clinic. Next fall, the vaccine will again be required by the state for school entry. If you are unsure if your child has had this vaccine, review their immunization records or call the school nurse.

VFW Ladies Auxiliary offers scholarship

High school seniors have until Feb. 14 to apply for the Vickie Webb Nelson Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship, which was established in 1969, is sponsored locally by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary to the Jerry V. Horn Memorial Post No. 10046 in Soldotna. Monetary awards are given locally, and one Alaskan graduating high school student receives $1,000 toward post-secondary education.

Area high school counselors have information and applications forms for the scholarship. For more information, call Mary Farmer, program chair, at 262-7685.
