Perfect season

Romberg finishes year with state title

Posted: Sunday, February 06, 2000

Soldotna senior Eric Romberg remained an undefeated juggernaut Saturday night at the Class 4A State Wrestling Championships at the Patty Center on the campus of University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Romberg plowed through the tournament and finished the championship match at 189 pounds with a pin at 1:46 against Dustin Trounce of Lathrop.

"I don't think it has quite hit me yet that high school wrestling is over. I came here focused to get this done and just did it. I was looking to win, get it over with and get my state championship," Romberg said.

Coach Sarge Truesdell of Soldotna felt the only other person in the state with a chance against Romberg was his own teammate Jake Urban.

"I expected our guys to do about as they did. Eric Romberg and Derek Tarr wrestled as good as they did all year. Eric wrestled the tournament of his life," Truesdell said.

In the battle for the team title, Service scored 159.5 points to take the state championship back from Skyview. The Panthers won the team title in 1997 and 1999, while Service has now won titles in 1998 and 2000.

Palmer, the state champion in 1996, was second at the meet while the Panthers were sixth and Soldotna was 12th.

Ten peninsula wrestlers finished in the top five at the tournament.

Soldotna finished with one first place spot and one in each of the second, fourth and fifth places. Skyview sent two wrestlers to the finals while also placing in the third, fourth and fifth spots. Homer wrestler Clayton Coy finished fifth at 119 and was the only athlete from his school to place in the top five.

Skyview's Ron Winger battled for third place at 135 after losing a tight overtime match in the semifinals to neighboring Soldotna wrestler Derek Tarr. Winger's teammate Ian Leach managed a fifth-place spot at 140 while at 160 Skyview's Chris Rice left the tourney with a respectable fourth-place finish.

Skyview 125-pounder Neil Strausbaugh wrestled a tight championship match with Palmer's Scott Jorgenson. Unfortunately, Strausbaugh could not defend the deep shot of Jorgenson and eventually lost the takedown battle 11-5.

At 130, Skyview's Jason Bussdieker faced a fearsome finals match with Willie Young from North Pole, who had thus far pinned every opponent in the tournament within two rounds. The match started off evenly when Bussdieker was taken down early but got an immediate reversal.

In the second period Bussdieker went for a dangerous ride and lost control giving Young a two-point lead. He fought back and managed to tie the match with just a few seconds left in the second, but again gave up a reversal and fell behind.

In the third, Young proved to be too much, turning Bussdieker onto his back shortly after the beginning of the period and holding him there for over a minute. Bussdieker finally managed to escape and in the waning seconds of the match he had a chance to pin Young but the clock ran out. He lost with a final score of 12-7.

Soldotna made its noise at 171 and 189 in the consolation bracket where Justin Thompson placed fifth and Urban fourth. At 130, Tarr lost in the last ticking seconds of his match in the finals against Bill Jolin of Service with a score of 8-7.

Truesdell believes with the loss of four seniors after this year his team will suffer in the team score category, but with the depth of talent Soldotna holds rebuilding won't be difficult.
