Guides creating hostile place for resident sports anglers

Posted: Friday, February 06, 2004

In reference to no nonresident anglers allowed on Sundays: This is clearly guide motivated and furthers their hold on the river. The Kenai is becoming a hostile place for resident sports anglers and their families.

I choose to spend my weekends and any free days on the river and supporting the surrounding communities. My parents have chosen to build their retirement home right on the Kenai River and will move there permanently this summer. I enjoy the fishery with my friends and family (some are nonresidents). We cherish everything about the Kenai and hope that the resource and fishing is every bit as good for my newborn son.

What the Department of Fish and Game should worry about is all the guides that fish the river on Sundays illegally now not the fact that not every single nonresident angler chooses not to be guided.

I look forward to Les Palmer's opinion on this subject.
