Seward girls, boys win tournament

The Seward boys and girls basketball teams completed sweeps of their respective brackets Saturday to win championships on their home floor at the Seward Basketball Classic.

After defeating Skyview 75-54 Friday, the Seward boys beat Houston 49-40 Saturday to finish the tournament 3-0. On Saturday, Jared Lindquist led the Seahawks with 16 points. Michael Thorn, who scored a team-high 25 Friday, added 11.

In other Saturday boys action, Skyview earned a 56-39 win over Delta to finish the tournament 2-1. Nic Madrid scored 18 points for the Panthers, who also received 11 from Albert White. Delta finished the tournament winless, while Houston was 1-2.

Meanwhile, the Seward girls followed a 60-22 win against Skyview on Friday with a 45-33 victory over Houston in Saturday's championship. Both Seward and Houston entered the game having opened the tournament 2-0.

Chelsey Clarke scored 19 points in the title game to lead Seward, while teammate Emily Draper added nine.

In other Saturday girls action, Delta beat Skyview 51-24. Brittany Mercier scored six points for the Panthers, who finished the tournament 0-3. Delta's lone win over the three games was against Skyview.

Nenana Invitational Tournament

The Nikolaevsk boys basketball team settled for fifth place at the Nenana Invitational Tournament after losing to Susitna Valley 54-45 in the game for third and fifth Saturday at Nenana.

Mark Fefelov and Eric Mametieff combined for 33 points in the loss. Elias Curtis and Mitch Drover scored 14 points apiece for Su Valley, while Stone Krueger added 11.

Nikolaevsk lost to Nenana 74-44 Friday. In that game, Mametieff led the Warriors with 13 points.

The Nikolaevsk girls, meanwhile, placed sixth after falling to Northway 53-40 in the game for fourth and sixth on Saturday.

Sophia Kalugin paced the Warriors with 17 points, while Northway was led by Tasha Demit's 30 and Desiree Demit's 21.

On Friday, Nianiella Dorval scored 26 points as Nikolaevsk beat Minto 59-32.

Nenana edged Fort Yukon 62-61 to win the girls championship.

Cook Inlet Academy girls 51, Lumen Christi 17

Ten players scored, led by Tiffany Smith's nine points, and the Cook Inlet girls cruised past Lumen Christi 51-17 on Friday.

Kelsie Leaf added eight for the Eagles, while Maggie McConnell scored a game-high 11 for the Archangels.

Lumen Christi boys 65, Cook Inlet 33

The undefeated Archangels beat the Warriors 65-33 behind 21 points from Ted Sturgulewski and 12 from Eli Portell at home Friday.

Matthew Moffis scored 14 to lead the Eagles.

Ninilchik girls 31, Lumen Christi 19

Ester Ehlers scored 17 points as the Wolverines jumped out to an early lead and held on for a 31-19 win over Lumen Christi on Saturday. Lumen Christi was led by McConnell, who scored 12 points.

Lumen Christi boys 38, Ninilchik 30

The Archangels held the Wolverines to one point in the third quarter, earning a 38-30 win at home Saturday. Lumen Christ got 14 points from Sturgulewski.

Dimond Invitational

The Kenai Central girls split a pair of games Friday and Saturday to finish 2-2 at the 2011 Dimond Lady Lynx Invitational at Dimond High School.

On Friday, the Kardinals edged West Valley 30-28 behind the 13 points of Morgan Wensley. Raquel Young added 12, giving the Kards the win despite the fact they shot 3-of-12 from the free-throw line.

On Saturday, the Kards fell to North Pole 41-28. Young scored a team-high 10, while North Pole received 10 from Josie Broderick.

Barrow Whalers Tournament

The Soldotna boys split two games and the Kenai Central boys went 0-2 Friday and Saturday at the Barrow Whalers Invitational at Barrow.

Cordova beat SoHi 53-48 on Friday, but the Stars rebounded to edge the Kardinals 54-43 on Saturday. Zach Jackson scored 15 points to lead SoHi past Kenai Central, while teammates Cory Carver and Evan Withrow added 12 apiece.

Tyler Spalding scored 13 for the Kards, who lost 50-48 against Barrow on Friday despite getting 17 points from Bo Reilly.
