Slick road causes two collisions; 2 injured

Posted: Monday, February 07, 2000

Extremely slick roads and the absence of sand were the conditions leading to two accidents late Sunday afternoon.

According to Kenai Police Officer David Vroman, a 1989 Buick, driven by Kevin D. Hubbard, 28, of Kenai, was traveling westbound on Beaver Loop Road about 4:30 p.m. Hubbard attempted to negotiate the corner near Angler Drive when he crossed into the eastbound lane striking a 1995 Jeep Cherokee, driven by Mary R. Zumwalt, 62 of Soldotna, head-on at a low rate of speed.

As a result of the collision, Hubbard suffered a fractured right leg and serious head lacerations. Zumwalt suffered an abrasion to the head from striking the windshield and complained of chest pain from hitting the steering wheel. The air bag of Zumwalt's vehicle deployed.

There was extensive damage caused to both vehicles, Vroman said, but no figures were available.

Not long after the accident, a 1977 Toyota pickup, driven by Tina Bolton, 38, of Sterling, came around the corner westbound. Unable to stop for the previous collision, Bolton struck the Buick with Hubbard still inside.

The pickup suffered minor damage to its left side, Vroman said.

"The road was so slick, there was nothing she could do," he said.

Neither Bolton nor her passenger, Edwin Englestad Jr., 43, of Sterling, were injured.

The Kenai police and fire departments and Central Emergency Services responded to the scene.

Hubbard and Zumwalt were transported to Central Peninsula General Hospital.

No citations have been issued. The matter is under investigation by Kenai police.

"The road is horrible. The whole road should have been sanded," Vroman said.

Vroman warned that secondary streets are slick and drivers should travel half the normal speed limit.
