Oilers coach changes bullpens
Oilers head coach Kyle DiEduardo has accepted a coaching position at Winthrop University. The move, from the University of Cincinnati, will not affect DiEduardo's 2003 commitment to the Oilers.
At Winthrop, DiEduardo will assist head coach Joe Hudak with pitchers. Winthrop is located in Rock Hill, S.C., and is a member of the NCAA Division I Big South Conference.
Preston Griffin, who has agreed to return for his second season with the Oilers, began the 2003 UCLA season by banging out two home runs and driving in six as the Bruins two out of three games last weekend to open the season. The UCLA second baseman finished the 2002 Oilers season batting .306 with 22 RBI, ranking him second on the team in both categories. Griffin spent the 2002 summer season with host parents Chuck and Irene Robinson. Griffin is a junior from Long Beach, Calif.
Florida Atlantic pitcher Randy Beam pitched six scoreless innings, allowing just 2 hits while striking out eight in his first start of the 2003 season. Beam also is slated to join the Oilers for the upcoming Alaska Baseball League season.
Pepperdine University shortstop David Uribes is Baseball America's pick for the West Coast Conference's freshman of the year. Uribes is signed for the Oilers 2003 season.
Also given preseason accolades by Baseball America is Rice University's duo of Chris Kolkhorst and Paul Janish, both members of the 2002 Oilers. The pair has been named to the preseason all-Western Athletic Conference team. In addition, Wake Forest University third baseman Jamie D'Antona (Oilers 2001) has been included on the publication's preseason All-American list.
Ronnie Goodwin (Oilers 1999) is now the pitching coach at the NCAA Division II University of Central Arkansas, a member of the Gulf South Conference.
