Good morning.

"You really tire out in that water. I mean if -- it's hard to explain. It feels like a fire in a sense, but the matter at hand was to not drown in it! There was nowhere you could swim because you had to break the ice as you went ahead." Richard Smith tells about his struggle to survive in freezing water after his plane fell through the ice in a story from an interview in "Quotes by Local Folks."

Reminder for school parents: There's no school because of in-service Friday.

Monday is Valentine's Day. Remember your "special one."

There is a service area board meeting at the Nikiski Senior Center Wednesday at 7 p.m. Board members and the public are invited to attend.

Don't forget the benefit spaghetti feed for Sherry Bradshaw, an employee at Phillips Petroleum Co. who is currently undergoing cancer treatment. The dinner is Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Kenai Senior Center. Cost is $10 per person. If you have questions or want to R.S.V.P., call Keith Farris at Phillips Petroleum Co. at 776-8166.

On Monday, the Nikiski Senior Center will host the annual board of directors dinner. Directors from Homer, Sterling, Ninilchik, Soldotna, Kenai and Nikiski will be the guests of honor.

Redoubt Homemakers will meet Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Nikiski Fire Station No. 1. All ladies are welcome to attend.

Congratulations to Janine Carlough, winner of last Sunday's cribbage tournament at the senior center. There's still more -- every Sunday at 3 p.m. through April 16.

Celebrating a birthday today are Chris Parker and Kenneth Anderson; Wednesday -- Melissa Humphrey and Caroline Huhndorf; Thursday -- Rena Kornstad, Ward Romans and Aaron Miller; Friday -- Kenneth Jordan, Jerry Miller and Milan Galey; Sunday -- Kara Shields; and Monday -- Al Johnson and Betty Best.

Celebrating their anniversary Wednesday are John and Marie Heft, and on Saturday, Jerry and Sandy Miller.

Have a good week!
