ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A federal grand jury in Anchorage has indicted a Yakutat man for allegedly making a false distress call.

Federal prosecutors said Arnold Williams, 39, called the Coast Guard office in Juneau on July 24 and reported a boat sinking with three people aboard southwest of Yakutat.

A Sitka-based Coast Guard helicopter arrived on the scene about two hours later and began searching, but found no one in distress.

The helicopter crew pinpointed the position of the radio call and discovered it came from the town rather than from the water.

Williams has pleaded innocent. His trial is set for April 2. If convicted, he faces a maximum six years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
