Anchorage resident Joyce Ellen Gibbs died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at Providence Alaska Medical Center. She was 53.
A private family service was held Jan. 18. Her ashes will be placed next to her mother at the Kasilof Cemetery.
Ms. Gibbs was born Aug. 18, 1948, in Covina, Calif., and moved to Alaska in 1953. Her parents homesteaded on the south side of the Kenai River in 1956-57. She attended Kenai Territorial School through Kenai High School. She also lived and worked at the family store, Gibbs Apparel, in Soldotna. She was a professional artist and received her bachelor of fine arts and master of fine arts degrees from the Otis Art Institute, where she had works of art displayed in the permanent collection.
She enjoyed the arts, cats and walking with her best friend Karen.
"She will always be remembered for her quirky smile, contagious laugh and the way she inspired the best in everyone she met, even when times were rough," her family said. "She'll also be remembered for her love of cheetah prints and bad puns."
Ms. Gibbs was preceded in death by her mother Virginia Jewell; father William Gibbs; and brother-in-law Frank Caggiano.
She is survived by her son Jonathan Graff; stepsons, David Graff and Darren Graff; siblings, James and Pat Gibbs, Gary and Wanda Gibbs, Janice Caggiano, Brian Gibbs, Christine Gibbs and Cheryl Gibbs; nieces and nephews, Ellery and Elsie Gibbs, Nicholas Gibbs, Aurora Gibbs, Francesca Caggiano, Camille Caggiano, Virginia Caggiano and Jedidiah Gibbs; great nieces and nephews, Matthias, Megan, Miriam and Elijah Gibbs.
Arrangements were made by Witzleben Family Funeral Homes and Crematory.
