Forums seek ideas on school budget

The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District is holding public hearings on next year's school budget. Parents and others are urged to attend to offer suggestions and to learn about pending cutbacks, which are likely to include teacher layoffs, higher fees, reduced nursing services and potential future school closures.

Tonight's hearing is in Seward at the high school library. Thursday, the hearing is at Nikiski Middle High School at 7 p.m. in a room to be posted.

Friday, the meeting is at Kenai Central High School in the library at 7 p.m.

The final hearing is Monday at the Homer High School library at 7 p.m.

Anyone wishing to contribute but unable to attend the public hearings is invited to attend the work session or school board meeting on Feb. 21 or a joint session of the school board and the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly on Feb. 29.

911 advisory board reschedules meeting

The 911 Advisory Board meeting has been rescheduled from today until Feb. 16 at 1:15 p.m. in Conference Room C of the Borough Administration Building. The public is invited to attend.

Kasilof historical society reschedules meeting

The Thursday meeting of the Kasilof Historical Society has been canceled. A program is planned for March 9.

Earth Day 2000 celebration planning begins

Re-Group is sponsoring an Earth Day 2000 planning meeting at 7 tonight at the Soldotna High School teachers' lounge. The group is looking for earth-friendly seminar presenters and exhibitors. For more information call Jan Wallace at 262-5098.

Public comments requested on transportation plan

The public has an opportunity to review and comment on the Central Kenai Peninsula Public Transportation Plan at a Public Transportation Community Forum on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Kenai Senior Center.

The forum is sponsored by the Central Area Rural Transit System, which also will provide snacks, door prizes, area maps, handouts and giveaways. Free rides can be arranged by calling 283-7493. The comment period ends Monday.

Nikiski senior service area budget to be discussed

A meeting of the Nikiski Senior Service Area Board will be held on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Nikiski Senior Center. The agenda includes a new budget. All members and the public are invited to attend.

Hockey team is hosting an evening of food, entertainment

The Kenai Peninsula Hockey Association's Squirt B Ice Hawk hockey team is hosting a spaghetti dinner at the Soldotna Elks on Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. After-dinner activities include a Chinese auction, silent auction and other fun-filled events with more than 100 prizes. Cost is $5 per person or $15 per family.

Rehabilitation video to be shown

National Multiple Sclerosis Society will present the video "Focus on Rehabilitation" on Thursday from noon to 2 p.m. in Classroom 3 of the Central Peninsula Hospital. Lunch will be courtesy of Taco Bell. For more information, call Barb at 262-8395.

Phi Theta Kappa holding general membership meeting

A meeting of Phi Theta Kappa is scheduled for Thursday at 4 p.m. in the Kenai Peninsula College commons area. Refreshments will be provided. For more information, call Jackie at 283-8197.

School to host chili feed and bingo night

Soldotna Middle School is hosting a chili feed and bingo night on Thursday. Dinner is served from 5 until 7 p.m. and bingo begins at 6 p.m. Cost is $5 per person or $20 a family for both the dinner and bingo. A single bowl of chili is $1.50. Dinner includes chili, bread, salad and dessert. There will be prizes for bingo.
