Kards top Stars, take conference

Posted: Sunday, February 09, 2003

The Kenai Central High School hockey team won its first Region III/4A North Star Conference championship Saturday, scoring a pair of goals in the final 3:03 to knock off Soldotna 3-2 at the Brett Memorial Ice Arena in Wasilla.

Both the Kardinals and the Stars had already earned berths in this week's Alaska School Activities Association State 4A Hockey Championships scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Soldotna Sports Center.

The Kardinals netted the first goal of the game, a tally by Region III MVP Adrian Borchgrevink, assisted by Owen Brewer, at 3:13 of the first period.

Soldotna tied the score just a minute later, though, on an unassisted goal by Derek Martin. The Stars took the lead on a power-play goal by Johnny Smith, assisted by Peter Kim, midway through the second period.

Borchgrevink knotted the score with 3:03 left in the third period, netting an unassisted power-play goal, and Brewer potted the gamewinner with 2:24 left to play, touching home a rebound after a Borchgrevink shot.

The game, played in the tight confines of the Brett Arena, was a hard-hitting affair. The Kardinals racked up nine minor penalties while the Stars were whistled for nine minors plus a 10-minute misconduct.

Daniel Silver made 29 saves for the Kardinals to earn the win. All-region goalie Egan Gleason stopped 24 shots for the Stars.

Friday's games

Both the Soldotna Stars and the Kenai Central Kardinals advanced to this week's ASAA State 4A Hockey Championships by virtue of their semifinal wins at the Region III/4A North Star Conference Tournament Friday at the Brett Memorial Ice Arena in Wasilla.

It is the first time both Soldotna and Kenai advanced to state in the same year.

The Stars were able to slip a pair of goals past Palmer freshman goaltender Kyle Berti for a 2-0 win.

Johnny Mills put the Stars on the board midway through the second period with a power-play goal, assisted by Derek Martin, and Martin scored in the middle of the third period, assisted by Mills.

Soldotna goalie Egan Gleason made 11 saves for the shutout. Berti finished with 43 saves.

Ryan Hicks sparked the Kardinals with a second-period hat trick as Kenai came back from a 2-0 deficit to notch a 6-3 win over defending region champion Colony.

Hicks potted his first goal 39 second into the second period to cut Colony's lead to one, then tied the game 5:47 later with an assist from Tommy Henson.

Phillip Ischi gave the Kardinals their first lead of the game, assisted by Adrian Borchgrevink and Levi Goldsby, with 1:59 left in the second period.

Hicks completed his hat trick 17 seconds later, assisted by Garrett Bossert and Henson.

Ischi added a goal five minutes into the third period, assisted by Borchgrevink, and Henson scored an empty-netter with 38 seconds to play to ice the win.

Garrett Myers made 16 saves in the Kenai net.
