Capture of bin Laden key to squashing extremism

Posted: Monday, February 09, 2004

The U.S. military is confident it will bring Osama bin Laden to justice by year's end, perhaps within months.

The security teams plan a spring offensive when warmer weather opens up the high mountain passes.

We're all for a confident approach, but bin Laden has uncannily evaded detection for 29 months. Afghanistan's mountains are among the most rugged terrain in the world. Unlike Saddam Hussein, bin Laden is an ascetic, used to living a marginal existence.

As long as bin Laden is on the loose, he inspires the worst elements of Islamic extremism in the Middle East. The sooner he is captured or killed, the safer America will be.
